Limburg’s provincial council has approved a study into heritage recognition for Pinkpop, including whether the long-running festival could eventually be nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status.

Limburg’s provincial council has backed a proposal to examine whether Pinkpop could be recognised as Dutch intangible cultural heritage and whether it might eventually be put forward for UNESCO World Heritage status.
The province is to map out the feasibility of a UNESCO nomination within six months. The proposal does not grant Pinkpop either status: the work is an assessment of whether a future nomination is viable.
The festival has been held annually since 1970. The proposal’s supporters, the VVD, described it as a Limburg success story that connects generations, creates opportunities for businesses and raises the province’s international profile. The party argued that UNESCO recognition could bring greater attention to both Pinkpop and Limburg.
Provincial executive Jasper Kuntzelaers said Pinkpop’s management was very enthusiastic about the plan.
