At least 33 people were killed and 36 injured in an airstrike in Kyauktaw, in Myanmar’s western Rakhine state, on Monday, the Arakan Army said. The armed group, which controls the area and is fighting Myanmar’s military, blamed the military for the attack. Reuters said local aid worker Wai Hun Aung, whose team operates in the area, confirmed the casualty figures. [2]
The attack was reported near a market. The Democratic Voice of Burma said three strikes hit the Indian Market and the neighbouring Kissapanadi Bridge, which crosses the Kaladan River. It reported at least 10 civilians killed and an unknown number injured. [4]
A Myanmar government spokesperson did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment. The government has previously said its military exercises maximum restraint to avoid civilian harm. [2]
