Renee Good’s brother, Brent Ganger, and her partner, Becca Good, filed two civil lawsuits on 1 October over her death in Minneapolis. One names the United States as defendant. The other names the ICE officer who shot her, Jonathan Ross, alongside officials including White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, former homeland security secretary Kristi Noem and border czar Tom Homan. The lawsuits seek unspecified damages. [3] [6]
The family alleges that Ross used excessive force and that senior federal officials conspired to interfere with civil rights during Operation Metro Surge. Its claims include an allegation that people of Somali descent and Hispanic people were denied equal protection under the law. [2] [4]
Ross shot Good while she was in her car on 7 January. Noem said the vehicle hit him and that he received hospital treatment. CBS News later reported that he had suffered internal bleeding, citing two US officials briefed on his condition. Accounts of footage differ: AP describes Good’s car turning away as Ross fired, while FOX 9 says one angle appears to show an agent about to be hit. [3] [6] [8]
The lawsuits also allege that federal officials concealed evidence about the shooting. In July, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office said Minnesota investigators had received previously withheld evidence and that Good’s car was in state custody. The Justice Department declined to comment on the litigation. [1] [3] [5]
