UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged parliamentarians at the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s 153rd Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, to help make institutions more inclusive and governments more accountable. In a video message published on 5 October 2026, he argued that their work was critical to rebuilding public trust. [1]
Guterres said good governance was central to tackling what he described as multiplying conflicts, widening inequalities and worsening climate disruption. He also said artificial intelligence and other new technologies brought both promise and greater risks. [1]
Guterres said the UN was pursuing change through its UN80 Initiative. He also said member states had committed under the Pact for the Future to reform the global financial architecture and the Security Council; he did not present those reforms as completed. [1]
