Dutch shipbuilder Damen is seeking nearly €4.7 billion from Germany after Berlin cancelled a six-frigate programme. The sum is a claim, not an agreed payment.
Review information is loading.
The demand follows Germany’s decision in June to end its F126 programme, under which Damen was to build six frigates. The German defence ministry cited major delays, rising costs and risks it said could not be calculated. It put the order’s value at about €10 billion. [5] [6]
NOS and Reuters reported seeing correspondence setting out Damen’s claim. A Damen spokesperson confirmed that its lawyer had sent a letter but did not confirm the figure. The company’s lawyer describes the sum as contractual payment and indemnity claims and says further damages claims are being considered separately. [1] [2] [3]
The parties disagree over responsibility for the programme’s failure. Germany has said Damen could no longer meet the agreed timetable and financial terms; Damen says Germany caused the delays and breached the contract. [2] [6]
