King Philippe has made the first symbolic journey along the full route of Antwerp’s new Scheldt Tunnel. The tunnel is part of a wider road project, with cyclists expected to use it from 2028 and cars from 2030.

Belgium’s King Philippe has symbolically become the first person to travel the full route of the new Scheldt Tunnel near Antwerp, as construction continues on a major project to complete the city’s ring road.
On Wednesday afternoon, the king drove the first section beneath the Scheldt and walked the final stretch. Around 200 people working on the tunnel, from project managers to construction workers, welcomed him at the other end, where he stopped to talk with them.
The tunnel is part of the Oosterweel Link, which is intended to complete Antwerp’s ring road. Finishing work on the tunnel is expected to take several more years. Cyclists are due to use it from 2028, with cars following in 2030; the full Oosterweel Link is scheduled for completion in 2033.
