Dutch state secretary for animal welfare Silvio Erkens finds it troubling that slaughter without prior stunning remains permitted in the Netherlands while efforts are being made to improve animal welfare. His spokesperson confirmed his position to news agency ANP following a report by RTL Nieuws. [1]
The Party for the Animals (PvdD) announced in 2025 that it intended to propose legislation that would, among other measures, ban ritual slaughter without prior stunning. Erkens’s spokesperson said the party was expected to send its bill to the Dutch House of Representatives in the week beginning 5 October. [1]
Erkens intends to examine the proposed bill seriously and with an open mind when it arrives, his spokesperson said. [1]
