The municipality of Het Hogeland in the northern Netherlands has sent the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) a warning letter asking it to close an emergency shelter in Uithuizen. It has given the agency three months to remedy the situation, according to an ANP report. [1]
The shelter has room for 250 people and was due to close on 1 September. ANP reports that a nationwide shortage of reception places means COA cannot move its residents elsewhere. The municipality says an enforcement procedure will follow because COA has not kept to the closure agreement. It had previously told councillors it was considering legal action. [1]
The municipality says it recognises the pressure on asylum accommodation and the lack of other places, but believes residents should be able to expect agreements to be kept. [1]
