A fire that caused extensive damage to the former teahouse known as the Eagle’s Nest in Bavaria flared up again overnight, prompting firefighters to return and extinguish it, German police said.
The blaze began on Friday evening at the building on the Obersalzberg, near Berchtesgaden. A 33-year-old suspect has been arrested on suspicion of arson, and the investigation is continuing. The report says the suspect has a mental health condition.
Initial estimates put the damage at millions of euros. Bavaria owns the building, and the state’s interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, expects it to be rebuilt.
Built in 1938 for Adolf Hitler to receive guests, the building was rarely used by him and survived the Second World War without damage. It has housed a historical exhibition and a restaurant since 1952.
