The United Nations reported 36 treaty actions at its annual Treaty Event, a four-day gathering that ended on 25 September during the General Assembly’s high-level week. Officials representing 22 states took part, including one head of state, one head of government, 17 ministers and three other senior officials. [1]
The actions included 13 signatures on the UN Convention against Cybercrime. These were signatures, not ratifications. The agreement on conserving and sustainably using marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, known as the BBNJ Agreement, reached 101 ratifications in total during the event. [1]
Elinor Hammarskjöld, the UN’s legal counsel, said the participating states had reaffirmed their commitment to international law. [1]
The BBNJ Agreement entered into force earlier in 2026. Its parties are due to meet in New York in January 2027 for their first Conference of the Parties, focused on putting the agreement into practice. [1]
