Michael Carrick says Manchester United’s dressing room has not been unsettled by Lisandro Martinez’s criticism of the club’s hierarchy, and confirmed the defender will be in the squad to face Leeds on Sunday.
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick says Lisandro Martinez’s comments about the club’s hierarchy have not affected the squad, and confirmed the defender will be included for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Leeds.
Martinez criticised United’s leadership after their 2-0 Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid. He later apologised for the timing of his remarks, but not for what he said. Carrick said the squad was in a “fantastic place” and insisted: “It [the squad] is not affected, I am telling you.” [1]
Former United players, including Wayne Rooney, Roy Keane and Gary Neville, have criticised or discussed Martinez’s comments. Rooney warned they could “rip the dressing room apart”. Carrick said outside commentary did not necessarily reflect what was happening inside the club.
Martinez’s remarks put director of football Jason Wilcox in the spotlight. Asked whether Wilcox should explain his actions to the media, Carrick said it was not for him to decide, adding: “We’re all in it together.” He said Martinez had acknowledged his mistake and that the club should move on.
Carrick said the squad needed to channel its passion and intensity constructively. United have won one of their opening six Premier League games, according to the BBC. Martinez is set to be part of the squad for the match at Elland Road, which kicks off at 14:00 BST on Sunday. [1]
