Mark Stewart and Anna Morris won gold for Great Britain at the Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai, taking the men’s points race and women’s omnium respectively. Morris’s victory came a day after she helped Britain win team pursuit gold. [1]
Stewart, 31, finished seven points ahead of Olympic omnium champion Benjamin Thomas, with Portugal’s Carlos Salgueiro taking bronze. The Scot said he was “speechless” to claim his first world title and thanked British Cycling, his wife and family for their support.
Morris, also 31, led the omnium standings after three rounds and secured the title with victory in the final points race. She beat Japan’s Tsuyaka Uchino and Denmark’s Amalie Dideriksen. Defending champion Lorena Wiebes of the Netherlands crashed in the opening scratch race, taking down several riders.
Britain also earned medals in Friday’s other finals: Emma Finucane took silver in the women’s sprint, Sophie Capewell narrowly missed bronze after a photo finish with Japan’s Mina Sato, and Joseph Truman won bronze in the men’s time trial. [1]
