Jorian ten Cate won the men’s mass start at the World Cup qualifying tournament in Heerenveen on Sunday, beating Harm Visser and team-mate Bart Hoolwerf in a sprint after a race marked by crashes, according to ANP, reported by Nieuws.nl.
The event used a new elimination format: every two laps, the last two skaters were removed until six remained to contest the finish. The previous format awarded points during the race, with the most points available at the finish of the 16th lap.
Dutch coach Rintje Ritsma will select the two skaters for the World Cup mass start.
