Aaron Ramsdale has missed Southampton’s first 10 matchday squads of the season across the Championship and EFL Cup. Daniel Peretz is the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, with George Long next in line; BBC Sport describes Ramsdale as fourth choice, although Jamie Jones is mainly a training goalkeeper. [1]
Manager Tonda Eckert told BBC Radio Solent that he and Ramsdale had held honest conversations from the start of pre-season until the end of the transfer window. He said Ramsdale was expected to support the team and had acted professionally. [1]
The change is striking for a goalkeeper who made the PFA team of the year after the 2022–23 season at Arsenal. Ramsdale lost his starting place to David Raya early the following season and joined Southampton for £25m in August 2024. He played 30 league games as Saints finished bottom of the Premier League with 12 points. He conceded 66 goals, though Southampton struggled across the side and some supporters praised him for preventing heavier defeats. [1]
A loan at Newcastle in 2025–26 did not secure him a regular place: he made 23 appearances in all competitions, kept two clean sheets and played 12 times in the Premier League. BBC Sport reports that he turned down summer loan offers from clubs in England, Spain and Italy and wants to fight for a Southampton place until at least January. [1]
Former Bournemouth team-mate Asmir Begovic told BBC Sport in its 28 September report that Ramsdale’s lack of playing time would be difficult and frustrating. He hoped to see him playing again in January, while acknowledging that a return would not be straightforward. [1]
