The Budapest Court of Appeal reduced Maja T.’s prison sentence from eight years to seven on 30 September. Hungarian news agency MTI, cited by Szeged365, reported that the appeal ruling is final. [2]
The case concerns attacks in Budapest in February 2023 on people the attackers considered far-right. A Hungarian court found T. guilty in February 2026 of aggravated assault and membership of a criminal organisation. The appeal court ruled that T. had not acted as a member of a criminal organisation, according to ANP/DPA reporting carried by Nieuws.nl. [1] [2]
T., who is non-binary, was arrested in Berlin in 2023 and surrendered to Hungary in 2024. Germany’s Constitutional Court ruled in 2025 that the surrender was unlawful because detention conditions in Hungary for non-binary people had not been adequately assessed. [1]
