Tuesday’s newspaper front pages are dominated by unrest in France and speculation over the UK government’s forthcoming Budget, with the Daily Telegraph reporting that the Army could lose £2bn from its front line.
The Telegraph says the Ministry of Defence has dropped plans for three new frontline vehicles. It links the reported change to Chancellor John Healey’s effort to address a shortfall in defence spending ahead of the Budget, due on 28 October. [1]
French protests and street violence feature prominently elsewhere. The Metro calls its coverage “The French correction”, while the Independent leads on a curfew imposed to curb unrest and reports that anger over living costs and housing is spreading to other European countries. The Financial Times focuses on the market fallout, saying French government bond yields have risen as investors become more reluctant to hold the debt ahead of the 2027 presidential election. [1]
Other UK front pages focus on possible Budget measures. The Times reports that no rise in capital gains tax is expected, while the i says the government will lift the two-child cap on childcare benefits by April. These are newspaper reports and expectations ahead of the Budget, rather than announced policy. [1]
The Guardian reports that Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ordered a rethink of options for Thames Water. The Sun says an early investigation into last month’s Hawk T2 crash near RAF Valley found the aircraft was flying with its fuel cap off. [1]
