Derek McInnes has reached 100 days as Rangers manager with his side on a six-match winning run, including two September victories over Celtic. The second, in the Premiership on 20 September, left Rangers two points behind their Glasgow rivals. [1]
It is a sharp change from the start of his tenure. Appointed on 17 June to replace Danny Rohl, McInnes saw his first league game end in a 1–1 draw with Dundee United. Rangers then lost in Europa League qualifying to Jagiellonia Białystok before a penalty shootout defeat by Jablonec on 26 August left them without a place in the main phase of European competition for the first time in 10 years. [1]
The winning run included a Premier Sports Cup victory over Celtic on 13 September, taking Rangers into the semi-finals, followed by the league win a week later. [1]
In analysis for BBC Sport published on 25 September, former Rangers captain and interim manager Barry Ferguson said he was impressed by the response to the European exit. He felt the players had found ways to win even when their performances were uneven, and were beginning to show greater togetherness. [1]
McInnes himself said during the winning run that Rangers still had plenty to improve, but needed to keep winning while they worked on those shortcomings. [1]
