More than 30 vehicles collided on the M20 in Kent late on Saturday, leaving two people seriously injured and closing the motorway in both directions as recovery work continued overnight, police said.
The crash happened at about 18:41 on the London-bound carriageway between junctions 8 and 9, near Hollingbourne. Kent Fire and Rescue Service said 11 people were treated by paramedics and two were taken to hospital. Police said one of the seriously injured people was taken to a local hospital and the other to a hospital in London; other drivers had injuries not believed to be serious.
National Highways said thick fog had been confirmed at the scene. An air ambulance, three fire engines and a technical rescue unit were sent to the incident. The road was expected to remain closed for several hours while vehicles were recovered and the scene cleared, the agency said.
Kent Police appealed for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
