AFP reported that a protester lost a hand to a police grenade during a demonstration in Saint-Étienne, France, on Saturday, 17 October, citing a source close to the case. The account was carried by the Italian news agency ANSA and the Dutch agency ANP. [2] [3]
The local newspaper Le Progrès reported that the prefecture had confirmed a person was seriously injured in the hand during the protest. That confirmation did not say whether the hand had been lost or what caused the injury. [1]
Le Progrès said several thousand people marched through the city amid protests over the cost of living and public services. It reported clashes near the Centre Deux shopping centre, where some demonstrators fired mortar fireworks towards police and officers used tear gas and several dispersal grenades. Its account does not identify what caused the hand injury. [1]
