Bayern’s Kompany taken to hospital after collapsing at training

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital after collapsing while watching the club’s reserve team train on Friday, the club said. He will remain under medical care, with his coaching staff taking over training and match duties until further notice.

Bayern said the 40-year-old Belgian was undergoing thorough examinations but gave no diagnosis or further update on his condition. The club’s sporting director, Max Eberl, said Kompany’s health was the priority and that he would receive the time and care he needed.

Kompany had been unwell with a virus in recent days and missed some training sessions, according to the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger. The newspaper said Sky had reported a collapse, while Bild first reported the incident at Bayern’s training ground.

Bayern are scheduled to play Freiburg away in the Bundesliga on Sunday. The club has not said whether Kompany will be available.
