Everton beat 10-man Newcastle United away for the first time in the Premier League since February, with a goalkeeping error from Lukas Hornicek handing Thierno Barry the decisive goal. The result was Newcastle’s fourth defeat in six league matches.
In BBC Sport’s player ratings, Everton midfielder James Garner received the highest mark, an eight out of 10, for what the reporter called a gritty performance of the kind manager David Moyes likes. Most of Everton’s starting side were rated seven.
Hornicek was given four after Tyrique George’s shot slipped under him, allowing Barry to score. Barry also received a seven. Newcastle captain Dan Burn and Lewis Hall were rated six, while substitute Jacob Ramsey scored three after being sent off.
Everton’s win brought a third consecutive league victory at St James’ Park and lifted the side from 14th to seventh, according to BBC Sport. Newcastle’s Anthony Elanga came close to equalising when his effort struck the post, while Harrison Armstrong missed a chance for Everton just before half-time.
