Nottingham Trent University and the University of Brighton currently charge UK students £9,790 a year for their three-year content-creation degrees. Nottingham Trent launched its course in 2022. [1]
Nottingham Trent course leader Jacky Gurr told the BBC that most students are not aiming to become influencers. She said they learn to produce videos, plan campaigns, understand audiences, analyse performance data and tackle the commercial side of content creation. [1]
Destiny McGowan, who graduated from Nottingham Trent in July, said she is already earning money from content creation, though she did not disclose how much. She posts on her own accounts, makes videos for others and has worked as a TikTok live selling host. She said the course gave her access to equipment and industry contacts, as well as social-media and business skills. [1]
UK-based full-time creator Knightenator said she would not have taken the course. In her experience, companies would put little weight on the degree, while advice for would-be creators is available online. Phoenix-based creator Aiesha Beasley took a different view: she said she would have enrolled if such a course had been available when she began blogging, believing it could have offered a clearer route to earning a living. [1]
Gurr cautioned that a degree cannot teach the luck or personality involved in becoming a successful influencer, even if students can learn the production and business skills behind creating content. [1]
