Shares in Dutch chip-equipment maker Besi jumped 11.4% on Tuesday after US rival Applied Materials said it would increase its stake in the company from 9% to about 20% and strengthen their collaboration. The gain made Besi the strongest riser among Amsterdam’s leading shares, according to ANP.
Besi chief executive Richard Blickman welcomed the announcement. He said the companies could work together on “the next generation of AI and photonics systems for leading customers in the sector”.
The rise helped lift the AEX index by 0.6% to 1,139.83 points. Applied Materials had acquired its initial 9% stake in Besi last year. The company has said a full takeover is not planned, as reported in an earlier account of the stake increase.
