The Wadden Sea World Heritage Centre (WEC) has again postponed a planned bankruptcy filing, saying public donations have raised €1.3 million in three weeks and that it is in talks with creditors about an agreement.
The seal centre’s board said on Friday evening that the support would allow it to continue operating for now while it looks for ways to secure its future. It did not say that a deal had been reached or that the financial shortfall had been covered.
The WEC had already delayed filing for bankruptcy by a week while it explored options to address a €2.8 million deficit. On 12 October, it said it would file within two weeks unless its prospects improved. The centre attributes its debt to higher-than-expected construction costs and visitor numbers below forecast.
The centre opened a year and a half ago in the harbour at Lauwersoog, housing the former seal rescue operation in Pieterburen.
