Former Sale Sharks lock Hyron Andrews died from natural causes after a tear in his aorta, an autopsy found, BBC Sport reports. The 31-year-old South African was found dead at the Lions’ team hotel in La Rochelle before a Champions Cup match on Saturday. [1]
The tear caused blood to fill the sac surrounding his heart. Andrews joined Johannesburg-based side the Lions this summer, after spending two and a half seasons with Sale.
His wife, Maighlin, and their two young sons are awaiting the return of his body to South Africa. In a statement from the Lions, she asked for “respect, privacy and patience” as the repatriation process begins. [1]
The Lions played La Rochelle on Saturday in Andrews’ honour. Sale director of rugby Alex Sanderson said his players “to a man, loved playing with Hyron and being around him”. [1]
