The Hague has extended a Saturday emergency order to the Malieveld and Central Station as unrest continued in the city amid a social-media call for riots and looting, Dutch news agency ANP reported. More than ten people had been arrested by the time of the report.
The order already covered the city’s central shopping district. The municipality broadened it as police sought to prevent clashes between young people at the Malieveld and football supporters who said they had come to protect the city.
Supporters of clubs including ADO Den Haag said they would help shopkeepers guard against possible looting. About 200 were on terraces on the Plein by around 4pm, after arriving from about noon. Police tried to keep the groups apart, and riot police intervened earlier on Korte Voorhout, between the two areas.
Several shops had boarded up their front windows and entrances as a precaution against people smashing in and stealing goods.
