Volkswagen and Audi are recalling more than two million vehicles worldwide over a steering fastener that could corrode and impair steering. Nearly one million of the affected vehicles are in Germany, broadcaster Deutschlandfunk reported on 25 September. [1]
Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority, the KBA, has warned of possible steering failure, NDR reported. Volkswagen told NDR that it discovered the problem during an internal quality review. Certain environmental conditions and years of exposure to road salt could cause corrosion, the company said. If that progresses, the steering attachment and its function could be affected in individual cases. [2]
NDR reported that no accidents or injuries linked to the defect were known. Citing Auto Motor und Sport, it also reported Volkswagen’s estimate that no more than 1% of recalled vehicles would actually have damage. [2]
In Germany, the Volkswagen recall covers affected Tiguan, Touran, Golf, Golf Variant and Caddy vehicles within a production window running from 24 September 2013 to 1 July 2024. An individual vehicle’s inclusion needs to be checked using its vehicle identification number. [2]
The recall also includes affected Audi Q3 vehicles produced between October 2017 and May 2024. NDR put the number of affected Audi vehicles at 696,547 worldwide, including 58,555 in Germany. [1] [2]
The manufacturers will contact affected owners and ask them to bring their vehicles to workshops. [1]
For Volkswagen vehicles, the KBA requires replacement of the affected fasteners with corrosion-resistant parts, NDR reported. Volkswagen says the repair takes up to an hour. The replacement is expected to be free of charge for owners under the German recall arrangements.
