Andy Burnham became UK prime minister after Sir Keir Starmer was ousted in July 2026. Burnham was elected Labour leader unopposed, BBC News reported. [1]
His return to Westminster came through the Makerfield constituency. Labour’s ruling body, with Starmer’s approval, had earlier blocked him from standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election. [1]
Burnham was first elected MP for Leigh in 2001 and later served in Gordon Brown’s cabinet. He left Parliament to become Greater Manchester’s first mayor in 2017. During his mayoralty, the region brought buses back under public control as part of the Bee Network, though his pledge to end rough sleeping by 2020 was not met. [1]
One of Burnham’s first acts as prime minister was to set up No 10 North in Manchester. BBC News also reported that Labour had edged ahead of Reform UK in opinion polls after he took office. [1]
