The Netherlands says phasing out fossil fuels will be a priority at the COP31 climate summit in Antalya. Its national roadmap aims to minimise their use by 2050 but sets no deadlines for ending oil, coal or gas.

The Netherlands will make phasing out oil, coal and gas a priority at the UN climate summit in Antalya, which opens on 9 November. Climate Minister Stientje van Veldhoven described the transition away from fossil fuels as a “cross-cutting priority” in a letter to parliament.
The summit will also hear the results of a special conference on the issue organised by the Netherlands and Colombia earlier this year. The Dutch government’s recently published roadmap for moving away from fossil fuels is also due to be presented internationally.
The roadmap says the Netherlands wants to “minimise” fossil-fuel use by 2050, but sets no specific end dates for oil, coal or gas. France has included such deadlines in its own national roadmap, while Germany presented one last month.
