Brighton’s 5-0 derby win made it four Premier League victories in a row and put them third after seven matches. Their scoring and defensive records have fuelled title talk, but the season is still young and the club face a demanding schedule.

Brighton’s 5-0 win over Crystal Palace extended their winning run to four Premier League matches and left them third after seven games, prompting fresh questions about whether they can challenge for the title. Their 23 goals are the most in the division, while they have also kept a league-high five clean sheets. [1]
Jack Hinshelwood completed Sunday’s derby victory with Brighton’s fifth goal, following Diego Gomez’s early strike from the halfway line. The result gave Fabian Hurzeler’s side an aggregate score of 15-0 across their four consecutive league wins. [1]
Match of the Day pundit Dion Dublin said Brighton’s togetherness, the manager’s decisions and goals from across the team made them look “a very, very frightening team”. But the evidence of seven games is a more cautious basis for a title prediction: Brighton have 16 points, behind leaders Manchester City and second-placed Arsenal, both of whom have won every league match so far. Brighton’s attacking numbers are impressive. They have 23 league goals, 42 shots on target and 19 big chances, and rank second for expected goals, with 14.9. Eleven different players have scored, alongside three own goals by opponents. [1]
The team have also adapted after losing forward Danny Welbeck to Chelsea in the summer, following the departure of Joao Pedro the previous year. Nineteen-year-old striker Charalampos Kostoulas has scored three league goals and provided two assists. At the other end, Brighton have managed without centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke and midfielder Carlos Baleba, while Luka Vuskovic has helped them record five clean sheets. [1]
History offers encouragement, but not a guarantee. Of the seven previous Premier League sides to score at least 23 goals after seven games, six finished in the top three. The exception was Newcastle United in 1994-95, who ended the season sixth. Leicester City’s 2015-16 title-winning campaign is another reminder that an outsider can go on to win: they had 12 points after seven matches and were eighth. [1]
Brighton fan and Albion Roar podcast co-host Alan Wares said a Champions League place was the club’s ambition, while calling talk of a title challenge “way too early”. He pointed to sustainability as the key test. The Seagulls also have Conference League matches to juggle, and face four consecutive away games in all competitions, including a trip to Manchester City on Halloween. [1]
City’s position could also be affected by an unresolved Premier League case. An independent commission found the club guilty of charges relating to breaches of financial rules over nine seasons; City are appealing. Any punishment, including a possible points deduction, and its timing remain unknown. [1]
