Roy Keane criticised Lisandro Martinez’s public remarks about Manchester United’s hierarchy after the defender said he was frustrated by the club’s summer investment.
Roy Keane has called Manchester United “like a circus” after Lisandro Martinez criticised the club’s hierarchy, as United’s poor run of results continues. [1]
The former United captain was responding to Martinez’s remarks after Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid. The defender said he had expected more summer investment in the squad and “more from our technical director”. On Wednesday, he said he had spoken out of “anger and frustration”.
Keane said Martinez’s comments reflected what he saw as wider chaos at the club. He also criticised the defender’s form, saying players should “start with the man in the mirror” before making public remarks.
United have gone five matches without a win and have won one of their first six Premier League games this season. Martinez, 28, is out of contract at the end of the season, with the club holding an option to extend his deal by a year.
Former United defender Gary Neville said Martinez’s comments amounted to a direct attack on his team-mates. He said senior players such as Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes could be angered by the suggestion that the squad needed more players.
United travel to Leeds United on Sunday. [1]
