Christian Wade scored twice for Newcastle Red Bulls in their 59–26 defeat at Northampton Saints, taking his career Prem tally to 97. The 35-year-old winger needs four more tries to equal Chris Ashton’s league record of 101, and five to break it. [1]
Scoring was high across the opening round: the 10 teams scored 52 tries in five matches, an opening-round record, BBC Sport reports. Four players scored hat-tricks, including Northampton’s Tommy Freeman, whose three tries against Newcastle took his career Prem tally to 58 at the age of 25. [1]
Ashton told the BBC’s Rugby Union Weekly podcast that he expects his record to be broken and believes whoever takes it next will not hold it for long, BBC Sport reported. [1]
