An Extinction Rebellion blockade near Utrecht Centraal affected around 49,000 travellers, Dutch infrastructure state secretary Annet Bertram has said. She cited an estimate by rail operator NS, Dutch news agency ANP reported on 25 September. [1]
Activists entered several railway tracks on 23 May and were removed half an hour later. Police arrested 27 activists. [1]

In a letter to the Dutch House of Representatives, Bertram said the financial figure captured only part of the blockade’s consequences. Disruption to rail operations and the deployment of emergency services were among the broader effects that were harder to express in monetary terms. [1]
Bertram also said repeated disruptions could undermine confidence in public transport, extending the potential consequences beyond the immediate costs of a blockade. [1]
