The Champions League is averaging 4.16 goals a game this season, its highest rate on record, as debate continues over whether the new league-phase format is making matches more entertaining.

The Champions League has reached its highest scoring rate in the competition’s history, with 187 goals in 45 matches this season — an average of 4.16 per game. The increase comes under the 36-team league-phase format introduced in 2024-25, which gives teams more fixtures and leaves 24 of the 36 still in contention after eight games. [1]
The current rate is also the third highest across the history of the European Cup and Champions League, behind the 1959-60 season’s 4.19 goals per game and 1955-56’s 4.38, BBC Sport reports.
This season’s second matchday produced 78 goals across Tuesday and Wednesday, a record for a Champions League matchday. Wednesday’s 46 goals made it the competition’s third highest-scoring day; only the final league-phase matchdays of 2024-25 and 2025-26, when 18 games were played, had more. [1]
The season’s tally includes 40 goals across nine games on Tuesday. Manchester City beat AEK Athens 5-1, with Phil Foden scoring a hat-trick. [1]
The new league phase has 36 teams, each playing eight different opponents. The top eight qualify directly for the knockout stages, teams finishing ninth to 24th enter a two-legged play-off, and the bottom eight are eliminated.
Some observers argue that the format’s reduced early pressure encourages teams to attack. Tom Arnott, a football writer for The Times, told BBC Radio 5 Live that the change had increased entertainment, but he was unsure it had improved the quality of football. He said teams could afford to play more expansively because a defeat early in the league phase did not necessarily end their hopes. [1]
Former Manchester United and England winger Ashley Young praised the scoring, saying on BBC Radio 5 Live: “The attackers are being clinical.” [1]
