Dalton Smith is the overwhelming pick to defend his WBC light-welterweight title against Alberto Puello in Sheffield, but boxing figures expect a testing fight against the experienced southpaw.

Dalton Smith is tipped by boxing figures to retain his WBC light-welterweight title when he faces Alberto Puello in Sheffield on Saturday, although several say the champion faces a difficult first defence.
Smith, 29, will box at the Utilita Arena in his first bout since stopping Subriel Matias in January to become world champion. He is unbeaten in 19 professional fights, with 14 stoppages. Puello, 32, has won 25 of his 26 bouts and is seeking to regain the WBC belt he lost to Matias on points last year.
Most of the 12 people asked by BBC Sport picked Smith to win. Several predicted a points victory, including former world champions Chantelle Cameron, Carl Frampton and Paulie Malignaggi. Former British boxer Zelfa Barrett forecast a late stoppage.
The predictions also highlighted the challenge posed by Puello’s southpaw style and experience. Cameron expects close rounds, while former world champion Barry Jones described Puello as a clever boxer who can make the fight awkward. DAZN presenter Ade Oladipo said he would not be surprised if Puello left with the title, despite edging towards Smith.
Smith’s home crowd and recent knockout of Matias were cited in support of the champion. Puello’s previous record includes a points win over Gary Antuanne Russell, now a WBA champion, according to Malignaggi’s assessment.
