Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ruled out a UK general election in May 2027 and said the next vote will be in 2029, rejecting the prospect of an early contest ahead of Labour’s annual conference. [1]
Burnham told the BBC he was not tempted to call an election and there would not be one “anytime soon”. Asked by ITV Calendar whether the next election would be in 2029, he replied: “Yes, that’s when the next election will be,” the BBC reported. [1]
He said helping households with the cost of living and businesses with their running costs should take priority. An election would mean “throwing the country into a backward-looking process where we’re arguing again amongst ourselves”, he said. [1]
The remarks came before Labour’s conference opens in Liverpool on Sunday. It will be Burnham’s first as prime minister, a post he took on 20 July 2026. [1] [2]
The Telegraph reported on Thursday that several senior members of his team favoured a spring 2027 election. Its account, republished by AOL and based on unnamed sources, said supporters believed an early vote offered Labour its best chance of another majority. They also saw conditions for such a move: resolution of the Middle East crisis, lower energy costs and a public perception that the government had delivered popular policies. [5]
The same report quoted a No 10 source saying: “One person in Downing Street makes the decision and he has ruled out an early election.” [5]
YouGov’s September seat model suggested Labour would be the largest party if an election were held at that time, but would lose its overall majority. Its central estimate put Labour on 241 seats, the Conservatives on 130 and Reform UK on 123. Labour would be 85 seats short of the 326 needed for a majority. [4]
The model used responses from 16,758 adults in Great Britain, collected between 23 August and 18 September. Labour’s estimate was up from 144 seats in YouGov’s September 2025 model, but remained 170 below the party’s 2024 election result. [4]
The latest possible date for the next general election is 15 August 2029, the House of Commons Library says. The prime minister can request an earlier dissolution of Parliament from the King. [3]
