A 14-year-old boy has handed himself in to police after a video appearing to show a fan taunting Sunderland supporters with a photograph of Bradley Lowery circulated on social media, West Midlands Police said. The force has launched an investigation into the incident at Coventry City’s Premier League match against Sunderland on Saturday.
Police said the boy would be spoken to in due course. The force said it understood the upset caused to the community and Lowery’s family, and was keeping them informed while working with both clubs.
Lowery, a Sunderland supporter, died aged six in 2017 from neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer. His mother, Gemma Lowery, said seeing one of her favourite photographs of him used in what she described as a cruel way was heartbreaking. She said she did not want hatred directed at the fan, but hoped the club would take appropriate action.
Coventry City said it was investigating the footage, did not tolerate offensive behaviour and would co-operate with the relevant authorities.
