The ANWB is buying Dutch energy supplier NextEnergy, a deal that would bring the motoring association closer to its stated ambition of becoming a major player in the Netherlands’ energy market. The acquisition still requires approval from the Dutch competition authority, the ACM.
ANWB Energie has about 200,000 customers, while Utrecht-based NextEnergy has around 90,000. Both offer dynamic energy contracts, with prices that vary over time.
NextEnergy also has a platform for energy supply and related services that can schedule electric-car and home-battery charging for hours when electricity is cheaper. ANWB chief executive Marga de Jager said that fitted with ANWB Energie’s aim of encouraging people to use electricity when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing, giving them more influence over their energy costs.
The companies have not disclosed the financial terms. They say customers will see no immediate changes, and the two businesses will remain separate until the ACM approves the deal. [1]
