Vught’s historic station building has been moved 13.6 metres east to make room for the platforms of a rebuilt, partly underground station due to be completed in 2030.
The move began at about 8am on Friday and was completed at 5.01pm, ANP reported. Workers first raised and reinforced the building and its basement with concrete and steel, then shifted them along steel tracks using computer-controlled rollers.
Hundreds of people watched from a stand and along the construction barriers, while several thousand more followed a livestream, the report said.
The station building has a painful wartime history: deportations of Jewish children from Camp Vught took place from there, and people were helped to escape German occupation through its basement.
The wider railway project between Den Bosch and Vught is intended to allow more freight trains to travel south.
