FC Utrecht beat FC Twente 2-1 in Enschede on Sunday, handing the hosts their first home defeat of the Eredivisie season and lifting Utrecht to 11th place. Twente missed the chance to move into a share of second and are fifth, six points behind leaders Feyenoord. [1]
Daouda Weidmann put Twente ahead in the 28th minute, but Utrecht’s Ángel Alarcón scored twice after the break to turn the match around. His second goal, a curling finish on a counter-attack, came after an hour.
The referee briefly stopped play after Twente supporters threw plastic cups towards Alarcón as he celebrated. Twente created the better chances in the final quarter, including hitting the crossbar, but could not find an equaliser.
It was Twente’s first league defeat since losing 1-0 away to sc Heerenveen in the opening round on 9 August. [1]
