Jonathan Blow’s The Order of the Sinking Star is due for release on Thursday, 8 October, after ten years of work by a small team. The game has roughly 1,500 puzzles, the BBC reported on 6 October, and Blow estimates it could take around 500 hours to complete. He believes it is the biggest puzzle game ever made. [1]
Its puzzles are spread across four worlds viewed from above. Each draws on mechanics from a different free puzzle game made by another designer, with their permission. Those ideas are then combined to create new puzzles. [1]
Blow, who previously made The Witness, told the BBC that he lets design take priority over business considerations. He described some of his choices as poor business decisions, but said that approach helps him make something unique. [1]
Blow also created a programming language called Jai and used it with a custom game engine. He cited that work as another reason the project took ten years to finish. [1]
