Abdoulie Sanyang put the Croatian side ahead in the 37th minute, finishing a Marin Šotiček assist. Davy Klaassen levelled for Ajax eight minutes after the break, set up by Thilo Kehrer, but Šotiček restored Hajduk’s lead three minutes later.
With 15 minutes remaining, Austrian referee Christian-Petru Ciochirca stopped play briefly because of heavy smoke from fireworks set off by home supporters. Ajax had an early chance through Tolu Arokodare, who was denied by a defender after going through on goal, but the visitors did not score again.
