Belgium’s King Philippe has refused to accept Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s resignation, asking him to make another attempt to secure agreement on the 2027 budget. Accepting the resignation could have led to an early election, according to ANP.
De Wever offered to resign on Monday after his coalition failed to agree on €10 billion in spending cuts. The king held off on a decision until Friday, meeting the leaders of the five coalition parties in the meantime.
The royal household announced the decision after Philippe and De Wever met on Friday. The king can play a mediating role in Belgian politics when parties cannot reach agreement.
