The *Stranger Things* actor is playing Mark in London and says theatre’s regular schedule is a refreshing change from filming.

Gaten Matarazzo is making his West End debut as Mark in a revival of *Rent* at London’s Tom Stoppard Theatre. The role follows the end of *Stranger Things*, the five-season Netflix series in which he played Dustin. Matarazzo had performed on Broadway as a child, but this is his first West End engagement, according to BBC Newsbeat. [1]
Matarazzo told Newsbeat that filming on *Stranger Things* finished in 2024; the series concluded in December 2025. “My favourite part of theatre specifically is the schedule,” he said, describing the regular routine and the need to stay hydrated as a refreshing change from filming. [1]
He said he spends most of *Rent* on stage and sings throughout. The part sits comfortably in his vocal range, he said, but the amount of singing makes vocal care essential. Asked about a possible return as Dustin, Matarazzo said he would welcome the opportunity but would also be content if it never came. [1]
Newsbeat says Matarazzo is booked to perform until 10 January. His co-star Travis Ross, who plays Roger, said the musical’s themes still resonate and described *Rent* as an ensemble piece. [1]
