UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on countries to renew their commitment to dialogue, cooperation and international law ahead of United Nations Day on 24 October.
In his message, issued on 20 October, Guterres said the UN was needed more than ever in a world shaken by conflict, climate change, inequality and rapidly advancing technology. He urged countries to uphold the UN Charter and work to strengthen the organisation so it can meet current challenges. [1]
The UN marks its 81st anniversary this year. Guterres said it had helped settle disputes through diplomacy and law, tackle poverty and hunger, promote human rights and deliver aid to people affected by war, disasters and displacement.
“Dialogue over division. Cooperation over confrontation. Solidarity over fear,” he said, setting out the values he urged countries to reaffirm. [1]
