Dutch judoka Yaël van Heemst won bronze in the women’s under-78kg category at the Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi, adding a second medal at a top-level international tournament to the silver she won in Dushanbe earlier this year.
The 24-year-old beat Russia’s Alexandra Riabchenko and Slovenia’s Metka Lobnik to reach the semi-finals, where Portugal’s Patrícia Sampaio defeated her. Van Heemst then beat Brazil’s Karol Gimenes in the bronze-medal bout.
She had also reached the medal contests at her World Championship debut in Baku in October, but lost the bronze-medal match.
