French police said 110,000 people took part in a protest march in Paris, where the demonstration had remained calm so far, while police used tear gas and clashed with protesters in several other cities.
The Paris march was rerouted at the last minute. Organisers had planned to march from Place de la Bastille to Place de la Nation, but police instead required the procession to start at Porte d’Italie and end at Porte de Vincennes, farther from the city centre.
Paris police said officers stopped 3,000 people for checks and arrested 65. In Lyon, Lille, Toulouse and Montpellier, confrontations had broken out between police and demonstrators.
