Police brought a Brussels protest to an end after more than 500 demonstrators returned to the centre, where barricades made from shared bicycles were set on fire. A separate protest in Liège left one person injured, according to RTBF.
Police in Brussels ended a protest on Saturday after demonstrators returned to the city centre and set fire to barricades made from shared bicycles. The unrest followed protests against education cuts and social inequality, though the disturbances in Belgium were smaller in scale than those reported in France, according to ANP [1].
Police had earlier pushed demonstrators back towards Brussels South station. A group of more than 500 then headed back towards the centre, where further damage was reported and the bicycle barricades were set alight. Police cleared the Bourse square in the afternoon.
In Liège, about 250 people gathered and clashed with police. One person was injured, the French-language broadcaster RTBF reported [1].
