Olympic beam champion Sanne Wevers announces retirement after missing world final

Sanne Wevers has announced her retirement from gymnastics after failing to qualify for the individual beam final at the world championships in Rotterdam on Monday. The 35-year-old, who won Olympic gold on the beam in 2016, said it was her final competition. [1]

Wevers scored 13.266 on the beam, short of the top-eight places needed for the final. She also said the Netherlands would not reach the team final, which is reserved for the top eight nations. [1]

“I would have liked to do better on the beam and extend my career by a few more days,” she said. But she added that she felt “a lot of gratitude” and was leaving with a sense of fulfilment. [1]
