AI ANALYSIS & OPINION
Editorial illustrationChuck Grassley’s 2004 Senate tally exceeded Trump’s best Iowa result. The president made his false record claim while announcing campaign visits on 22 October and 1 November.
Donald Trump’s claim to have won more votes in Iowa than any candidate for any political office is false. His best Iowa total was 927,019 in the 2024 presidential election. The state’s final official count for the 2004 US Senate race records 1,038,175 votes for Republican Chuck Grassley. [2]
In a Truth Social post on 15 October 2026, Trump announced rallies on Thursday 22 October and Sunday 1 November. He described his three Iowa victories as “Landslides” and claimed the “Highest Vote ever obtained by a Political Candidate (for any Office!)”. [1]
The announcement came a day after early in-person voting became available in Iowa on 14 October. Election day is 3 November, putting the second planned rally just two days before polling day. [4]
Trump said the visits were intended to help elect Ashley Hinson to the US Senate and Zach Lahn as governor. He also backed Mariannette Miller-Meeks for Iowa’s 1st congressional district, Joe Mitchell for the 2nd, Zach Nunn for the 3rd and Chris McGowan for the 4th. All six appear as Republicans in those contests on the state’s official candidate list. [1] [3]
His support for Hinson was a reaffirmation: he had already endorsed her in a separate post on 1 September. [6]
Radio Iowa reported that state Republican chairman Jeff Kaufmann had also given the two rally dates and said further details would be released later. The visits follow an earlier campaign promise: at a White House event on 28 September, Trump pledged in-person help for Hinson, Miller-Meeks and Iowa attorney general Brenna Bird, according to the broadcaster. It quoted him saying: “I got more votes than anybody in history during the last election.” [5]
Trump did win Iowa in 2016, 2020 and 2024, and his own vote total increased at each election. Those were genuine victories, but they do not establish the record across all political offices he claimed: even his 2024 peak was 111,156 votes below Grassley’s 2004 total.
